New year, new me, new goals. New year, new me, new everything. It seems EVERY year, EVERY-one says the same thing and have the same results, which is no results… The questions is why is it so hard to stick to “New Year’s Resolution” goals? but the “real” question is “why is it so hard to stay consistent?” Is it because my goals are too unrealistic? Are they too hard? Are they too…. BS. You’re lying to yourself. It’s time to get serious! What are the reasons why you’re choosing your goals? Do they drive you? Are your feelings getting in the way? Are you making them priorities? If you mess up once, do you quit immediately? These are the real questions you need to be asking yourself in 2021. This is how you’re going to stay consistent in the new year.
1.) Find Your Why
A lot of times, people set New year’s resolution goals to tell themselves that they have goals, but what are we doing to stick to them? “I’m going to lose 20lbs this year!” OK, Great! How are we going to do that? “Oh, I’m not too sure”. It’s great to have new goals. Do you know what’s greater? To achieve them. The first step to be consistent and to stick to your goals is to Find your why. Why do you want to lose 20lbs? Why do you want to make more money? Why do you want start that new business? – It all comes Down to your “why”. Find that, and choosing the right goals becomes easier. “I want to lose 20lbs so I can play sports with my kids!” “I want to make more money so I can get out of debt & take my family on a vacation of their dreams!” “I want to start a business so I can stop being in the rat race and working a 9-5!” The more specific you get with your goals, the easier they are to achieve! Let’s keep going.
2.) Write Down Your Goals
It is a proven fact that if you write ANYTHING down it is easier to remember. Writing your goals down works the same. I write my goals down in my journal and I review them every morning and every night. It helps me remember my goals and helps me stay accountable. It’s as simple as writing down the goals that drive you, and looking at them throughout the year. The best part is, crossing them out as you finish them, watching that goal list go from 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, – all the way to 0! You will feel great knowing that you smashed your goals.
3.) Schedule Your Priorities
Scheduling. A dreadful word that reminds us every day that we have school at this time, and work at this time, the doctor’s appointment is at this time, etc. But, scheduling helps us stay consistent, and helps us prioritize things. Work Starts at 9 and ends at 5. “If I wake up 1 hour earlier, I can work out for an hour and then begin to get ready for work” It might mean adding one or two more things to your schedule, BUT, to reach your goals and to stay consistent, you need to prioritize your goals. They are just as important as everything else in life. Without goals, what are we working towards? Things can’t just stay the same and we hope for a new outcome. We have to create our own results.
4.) Ignore Your Feelings
If I had a dollar for every time I didn’t go to the gym because I didn’t feel like it, I would have more money than Jeff Bezos. Just kidding, probably not but you get the point. I don’t always feel like going to the gym after a stressful day. I don’t always feel like eating clean and healthy and wish I could get a greasy cheeseburger. I wouldn’t be where I am today if I didn’t ignore my feelings and push through anyways. Neither would the Warren Buffet’s of the world and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s of the world. Consistency doesn’t care how you feel. We ignore our feelings and push through.
5.) Fall Down 7 Times, Stand Up 8
Fall Down Seven times Stand Up Eight – I know everyone has heard the saying. But it’s true! You don’t ever want to give up on your goals. You say you’re going to go to the gym every day, you commit and go to the gym everyday even if you only walk on the treadmill for 20mins. Consistency breeds discipline. The more you do it, the easier it gets. And if you miss one day, don’t sweat it, just go the next day. Don’t Give Up! Keep going.
